Intervista a Hempress Sativa

D. Hempress Sativa come ricordi la tua infanzia a Papine?

R. Ad un certo punto della mia infanzia ho vissuto a Mona Common, Papine. Una comunità adiacente all’ospedale UWI.

Ho iniziato a cantare a casa.

ENGLISH VERSION
Q. Hempress Sativa how do you remember your childhood in Papine?

A. At one point of my childhood, I lived in Mona Common, Papine. A community adjacent to the UWI hospital. I grew up in the Ghetto but the life my Parents tried to create made all that seemed like paradise. I would play around the community with my 5 older siblings, we had lots of fun experiences and didn’t know that we were struggling. My parents made it seem so easy. We had food, clothing, shelter and a sound system. My father being a lover of music would everyday play his sound system, literally giving us a soundtrack to everyday life. He would play a version of a song and called all six of us to his station and give us the mic to just sing whatever we wanted. We loved it for the most part. We were young and happy. I grew up with Ras Tafari parents so we had discipline, respect and integrity instilled at a very young age. My family moved out that Community in 1988 to Constant Spring. There I started to attend school. I was more focused on dancing and was determined that I would become a Choreographer and a Lawyer. As I grew older and started paying attention to my older sisters who were professional background vocalists for Tinga Stewart, Mikey Spice and Jahmali, I wanted to explore more that side of music. So I started to sing at the school concerts and even auditioned for Tastee’s Talent search. I didn’t get placed but was even more focused on writing and recording.

Q. Is it true that you started singing very young on the mic of Jah Love Sound System?

A. This is not true. I started singing at home. My dad would put a version on and call myself and my other siblings to sing on the mic. He would record it then play it back for us.

Q. Since you are a Ras Tafari practitioner how do you comment the recent news of the destruction of Shashamane tabernacle these days?

A. H.I.M Haile Selassie I gave through the Ethiopian World Federation 500 acres of land in Shashamane for those of African descent to repatriate. During the war so many Africans in America especially Harlem and even Caribbean countries such all supported Ethiopia during a devastating time. The Ras Tafari community above all took the lead to repatriate to the land, which was reduced in acres by the government of Ethiopia. It is sad and hurtful to see this level of threat towards the vision H.I.M Haile Selassie I had for Africans living in the west to be able to return to the motherland and have a piece of land that they can actually call their own.
Ras Tafari faith is under a multifaceted attack by individuals and government agents, inside and outside of the Ras Tafari community who want nothing more than to see our downfall. More than ever now is the time when we must mobilize together as H.I.M Haile Selassie I said organize and centralize, come as one in unity.

Q. Why did it happen in your opinion and what it represent for you?

A. The actual truth/story is unclear to me at moment, So therefore I can’t formulate an opinion. Even so in this regard I rather have the facts than opinions told.

Q. Tell me about your experience in Jah Ova Evil…

A. Jah Ova Evil was the moniker for Alty George” Nunes, who was a singer, songwriter and performing artiste who passed away, way too soon in 2011.
His older brother wanted to keep his legacy alive. He renamed his original studio from Flow Factory to Jah Ova Evil in honor of his brother. Must be noted before we can speak on the experience.
Jah Ova Evil was instrumental in the creation of my first recordings.
That’s where it all started, We would always be at the Twelve Tribe Of Israel HQ reasoning and creating music. We were hungry and eager to share our creations, literally hungry together at times, sharing food and whatever was needed amongst us. We were filled with the zeal of Ras Tafari to come forth and speak conscious messages into the music we were doing. To this day I see all the Idrins them from Jah Ova Evil still continuing with the good works. We have never shifted or changed course to this day we still a Chant for Ras Tafari. Big Respect to Micah, Kazam, Infinite and Selah.

Q. How did you enter in touch with our fellow Mellow Mood and Baldini? What did you remember of that experience?

A. I actually didn’t know nothing of Mellow Mood nor of Baldini until they introduced themselves to I. I met them through Jahnoi the brother of JOE. We were becoming known all over the world, especially in Europe although we had never traveled there before. So I was being contacted via Jah Ova Evil to do songs, interviews and shows. I was hesitant to work with others to collaborate on songs because it is very important for me to know the person and what they are about before I align talent with there’s. But I ended up meeting Giulio who was very humble which encouraged me to agree, then I also met Forelock, Paolo Baldini and the twins Mellow Mood. We spoke and I explained my concerns to them, Especially regarding the business aspects of the collab as I’ve seen my fathers mistake and didn’t want the same faith.

Q. I follow you on socials and I saw you’re very close to the legendary Burning Spear that endorses you everytime he can. How did this link started?

A. I’ve yet to meet Burning Spear in person. We’ve communicated via comment on Facebook. I honestly cannot say how that came about. I can only guess and yet not be so certain but I think it perhaps has to do with a picture that was posted from my social with the lyrics from his song.
Mr Spear is a living icon. Who’ve yield nor waived his love for Ras Tafari, Marcus Garvey, Africa and Reggae. My Utmost honors and Respect is given and due every single time to him.

Q. Are you working on something new in studio?

A. Yes Always! I am a creative and that’s what we do, We create constantly. So I have the Album working on now which is 80% complete I can’t wait to share this body of work with the world.

Q. Who’s the artist you would like to feat with at the moment?

A. Dezarie & Burning Spear is at the top of my list.

Q. Tell me about your summer tour…

A. Im anticipating it to be a great experience. We have an opportunity once more to touch base with our fans across Europe. We hope everyone is excited to hear some oldies and newbies and to Represent for Jamaican Culture by sharing some sweet Reggae music with the massive. Looking forward to debuting my 5 piece Band the Unconquerebels we’ve been rehearsing for almost a month now just making sure the sound is right, it’s my first time visiting OverJam Festival, Uprising, Esperanzah Festival, One Love Festival plus a UK run of shows.
