La band irlandese WeedWay presenta l’attesissima uscita del loro album di debutto A Shedsworth: un mix eclettico di suoni, forme e atmosfere dai toni e vibrazioni positive in stile reggae. Ecco cosa ci hanno raccontato.
D. Potete parlarmi del tuo nuovo album A Shedsworth? Prima di tutto, perché questo titolo?
R. Le canzoni dell’album sono state composte nel capannone di un nostro amico che ha gentilmente permesso alla band di provare, quindi si tratta davvero di musica “A Shedsworth”, da capannone.
D. Che tipo di suoni possiamo trovare in esso?
R. Si tratta di un mix eclettico di suoni, forme e atmosfere con toni e vibrazioni positive in stile reggae, con un’impronta chitarristica e un’abbondanza di tasti radicati in un forte sound di batteria e basso.
D. Voi siete irlandesi e l’Irlanda non è proprio il primo posto che viene in mente quando pensa alla musica reggae…
R. Anche se l’Irlanda non è il primo Paese che vi viene in mente quando pensate alla musica reggae, qui c’è una scena reggae abbastanza sviluppata, che comprende molti gruppi e DJ diversi. Il reggae ha goduto di un’enorme popolarità in Irlanda per molti decenni, da quando Bob Marley & The Wailers hanno fatto irruzione sulla scena mondiale, portando alla ribalta molti altri artisti reggae e ska che hanno influenzato generazioni di musicisti e persone in generale.
D. Come è nata la vostra passione per il reggae? Chi sono i vostri modelli musicali?
R. La nostra passione per la musica reggae è nata dall’ascolto di artisti del calibro di Marley, Lee Scratch Perry, The Specials e la lista è quasi infinita. Siamo stati influenzati a tal punto da non avere altra scelta che scrivere la nostra musica e contribuire a questo grande genere.
D. Vi piacerebbe lavorare con qualche artista giamaicano?
R. Ci sono molti grandi artisti giamaicani là fuori e molti con cui vorremmo lavorare, ma sicuramente Eek A Mouse è uno dei nostri preferiti e il primo della lista.
D. Com’è la comunità reggae in Irlanda?
R. La comunità reggae in Irlanda è in continua crescita e ha un sacco di serate reggae e ska nei locali di tutto il Paese e una fiorente scena di festival.
D. Potete dirmi come è cambiato il vostro stile rispetto al singolo Huskies?
R. Naturalmente il suono cambia da un brano all’altro dell’album e il suono della band cambia nel tempo con le registrazioni e le esibizioni dal vivo.
D. Perché la scelta di inserire nel nuovo album uno strumentale come Cannibal?
R. Abbiamo eseguito Cannibal per molti anni nei nostri live set e in molte occasioni abbiamo concluso il set con questo brano. Abbiamo deciso che doveva essere anche l’ultima traccia di A Shedsworth.
D. State lavorando a qualcosa di nuovo?
R. Abbiamo ancora molto materiale originale da presentare e stiamo continuando a comporre nuove canzoni come band e speriamo di entrare in studio molto presto per il nostro prossimo album; inoltre, Jake Foran, membro della band, ha pubblicato alcune grandi canzoni come progetto solista che devono essere ascoltate.

Q. Can you tell me about your brand new album A Shedsworth? First of all why this title?
A. Well the songs off the album where composed in a friend of ours shed which he kindly allowed the band to rehearse in, so it really is ‘A Shedsworth’ of music.
Q. What kind of sounds we can find in it?
A. You’ll find it’s an eclectic mix of sounds, shapes and atmospheres with positive tones and vibes inna Reggae Style, it would be somewhat guitar driven with plenty of keys rooted in a strong drum and bass.
Q. You’re Irish and Ireland is not the first place it comes to your mind when you think about reggae music.
A. Although Ireland may not be the first country that comes to mind when you think of reggae music, there is a fairly healthy reggae scene here, including many diverse bands & DJ’s. Reggae has enjoyed huge popularity in Ireland over many decades ever since Bob Marley & The Wailers burst on the scene globally which led to breakthroughs for many other reggae and ska artists who have gone on to influence generations of musicians & people in general.
Q. How it started your passion for it? Who are your musical models?
A. Our passion for reggae music came from listening to the likes of Marley, Lee Scratch Perry, The Specials and the list is almost endless. We were influenced to the extent that we had no choice but to write our own music and contribute to this great genre.
Q. Would you like to work with some jamaican artist?
A. There are many great Jamaican artists out there & many we would like to work with but Eek A Mouse would be a particular favourite we would like to collaborate with.
Q. How is the reggae community in Ireland?
A. The reggae community in Ireland is growing all the time & has plenty of reggae and ska nights in venues around the country and has a burgeoning festival scene.
Q. Can you tell me how your style changed from the single Huskies?
A. Naturally the sound changes from track to track on the album and the band’s sound changes over time with recording and live performances.
Q. Why the choice to insert in the new album an instrumental like Cannibal?
A. We had been performing Cannibal for many years in our live set and on many occasions would finish off the set with the track. We decided that it should also be the last track on A Shedsworth.
Q. Are you working on something new?
A. We have a lot more original material to get through and are still composing new songs all the time as a band and hope to get into the studio very soon for our next album also band member Jake Foran has some great songs out as a solo project and must be heard.
