Il gruppo marsigliese Baja Frequencia è composto da due produttori e DJ, Azuleski e Goodjiu. Nato dal desiderio dei due protagonisti di fare un set ibrido tra macchina live e dj set bootleg fatti in casa per una delle loro serate “Cumbia Fusion” e “Global Bass”, il duo prende vita nel 2013. In risposta al feedback positivo del pubblico e di coloro che li circondano, il progetto diventa più permanente e il gruppo si dedica alla produzione musicale. In 10 anni di attività e attraverso le varie produzioni e collaborazioni (La Dame Blanche, MC Blimes Brixton, Skarra Mucci, Chocolate Remix…), il gruppo ha lasciato il segno con le sue esibizioni dal vivo e la sua singolarità, mescolando molteplici influenze.
D. Parlami del tuo singolo Kapepela con Wanny S-Sing…
R. Ciao, il nostro singolo Kapepela vede la partecipazione del cantante reggae congolese Wanna S King. È un brano percussivo con molte influenze e sapori. Questa musica è fatta per farvi rimbalzare sulla pista da ballo!
D. Come definireste il vostro stile?
R. È difficile definire il nostro stile, perché amiamo fondere stili diversi nella nostra musica, con molte vibrazioni tropicali/latine, come reggaeton, cumbia, dancehall, baile funk, ecc. si sentono anche molti sapori più elettronici, come techno, acid, uk bass… Quindi la chiamiamo Global bass music o nu club music, ma onestamente non sappiamo come chiamarla haha.
D. Come avete deciso di iniziare a lavorare insieme?
R. Ci siamo conosciuti in un collettivo di DJ a Marsiglia, dove organizzavamo feste con il nostro sound system, reggae, dub, jungle e drum’n’bass. Prima di allora io (Azuleski) vivevo in Argentina, quindi avevo un sacco di cumbia e reggaeton che volevo suonare, e il mio compagno di squadra (Goodjiu) aveva un amico che aveva portato dei cd di moombahton e reggaeton dal Messico, così abbiamo deciso di fare serate tropicali con il nostro collettivo, e da lì è nato Baja Frequencia.
D. Quali sono le principali influenze nella vostra musica?
R. Di nuovo, ce ne sono così tante che è difficile dirlo! Ma credo che il primo album dei Major Lazer sia stato una ma anche produttori più underground come Munchi di Rotterdam, che è considerato il padrino della moombahton, e anche il duo tedesco Schlachthofbronx.
D. Voi avete lavorato a diverse produzioni e avete collaborato con molti artisti. Quali sono i ricordi più belli di queste esperienze?
R. Ce ne sono molti! Uno dei più belli è stato quando abbiamo lavorato con La Perla, una band di Bogotà, Colombia. Siamo andati a Bogotà e abbiamo trascorso un po’ di tempo con loro e la loro troupe, è stato davvero bello! Anche lavorare con Chocolate Remix è sempre un piacere, sappiamo sempre che registrerà dei testi davvero belli e con significati forti, ma è difficile definire quali siano i ricordi di tutte queste esperienze!
D. Preferite lavorare in studio o esibirvi sul palco?
R. Personalmente, io (Azuleski) preferisco lavorare in studio, esplorando i suoni e creando beat, ma il mio Goodie (Goodjiu) preferisce il palcoscenico ed è vero che sentire le vibrazioni della folla è molto bello! Credo si tratti di trovare un equilibrio.
D. Con chi vorreste lavorare nelle tue prossime produzioni?
R. Ce ne sono molti! Per cominciare, ci piacerebbe lavorare di nuovo con alcuni degli artisti con cui abbiamo già lavorato, ma anche con molti altri artisti con cui vorremmo lavorare e, se potessimo scegliere, sarebbero Koffee, Little Simz, Tokischa… e molti altri!
D. I prossimi progetti?
R. Al momento ci stiamo pensando, ma non c’è ancora nulla di definito. Probabilmente un nuovo fatring con MC, perché ci piace farlo e non ce n’erano molti nel nostro ultimo disco.

Q. Tell me about your single Kapepela with Wanny S-Sing…
A. Ciao, our single Kapepela features the Congolese Reggae singer Wanna S King. It’s a percussive track with lots of influences and flavors. This music is made to get you bounce on the dancefloor!
Q. How would you define your style?
A. It’s hard to define our style because we love to blend different styles in our music, a lot of tropical/latin vibes in it of course such as reggaeton, cumbia, dancehall, baile funk.. but also a lot of more electronic flavors can be felt, like techno, acid, uk bass.. So we call it Global bass music or nu club music, but honestly, we don’t know what to call it haha.
Q. How did you decide to start to work together?
A. We met in a DJ collective in Marseille, where we organized parties with our sound system, playing reggae, dub, jungle and drum’n’bass. I (Azuleski) was living in Argentina before that, so I had a lot of cumbia and reggaeton that I wanted to play, and my team-mate (Goodjiu) had a friend who’d brought back some cd’s with moombahton and reggaeton from Mexico, so we decided to do tropical nights with our collective, and that’s when Baja Frequencia started.
Q. What are your major influences in your music?
A. Again, there are so many that it’s hard to say! But I think Major Lazer’s very first album was a trigger for us, but also more underground producers like Munchi from Rotterdam, who is considered the godfather of moombahton, and also the German duo Schlachthofbronx.
Q. You worked on various productions and cooperated with many artists. What are the best memories of these experiences?
A. There are lots of them! One of the best was when we worked with La Perla, a band from Bogota, Colombia. Then we went to Bogota and spent some time with them and their crew, it was really nice! Working with Chocolate Remix also is always a pleasure, we always know she’s going to record some really cool lyrics with powerful meanings, but it’s hard to define what the memories of all these experiences are!
Q. Do you prefer to work in studio or to perform on stage?
A. Personally, I (Azuleski) prefer to work in the studio, exploring sounds and making beats, but my Goodie (Goodjiu) prefers the stage and it’s true that feeling the vibe of the crowd is so good too! I guess it’s making a balance.
Q. With whom would you like to work with your next productions?
A. There are lots of them! And to start with, we’d like to work again with some of the artists we’ve already worked with, but also with a lot of artists we’d like to work with, and if I could choose, it would be Koffee, Little Simz, Tokischa… and many more!
Q. Next projects?
A. At the moment, we’re thinking about it, but nothing is definite yet. Probably a new fatring with MC’s, because we like doing that and there weren’t many on our last release.
