La band californiana Tribal Seeds pubblica il nuovo album in studio, Ancient Blood. Questo nuovo lavoro segna un’importante pietra miliare nel percorso del gruppo, mettendo in mostra il loro sound caratteristico mentre allo stesso tempo esplorano nuovi territori sonori. Traendo ispirazione dal roots reggae, infuso con moderne tecniche di produzione, l’album è un’odissea sonora che trascende i generi.
D. Parlatemi di Ancient Blood…
R. È il nostro nuovo album completo dopo quasi 10 anni. Siamo grati di avere tanti artisti straordinari in questo album. Volevamo dare ai nostri fan molte canzoni in questo album, visto che è passato così tanto tempo, 17 tracce. Ci piace fondere una varietà di generi all’interno del nostro stile di musica reggae e incorporare generi come lo ska, il roots, il rock, la cumbia, il latino, l’hip hop, la trap, l’edm. Il titolo Anicent Blood rappresenta il sangue dei nostri antenati che scorre in noi e l’antica conoscenza, la saggezza e l’intuizione spirituale che portiamo con noi.
D. Nomi coinvolti. Come siete riusciti ad avere così tanti feat. nel vostro album?
R. Alcuni degli artisti presenti si conoscono da anni e sono stati in tournée insieme a noi. Gli altri sono nostri fan e siamo entrati in contatto con loro via e-mail o tramite amici del settore. Siamo entusiasti di aver collaborato con artisti così straordinari.
D. La band si è formata a San Diego?
R. Sì, a sud di San Diego, nella zona di Chula Vista, vicino al confine con Tijuana.
D. Come è nata la band?
R. Io e mio fratello abbiamo iniziato a suonare con alcuni amici in un garage, come fanno molte band, ma quando abbiamo deciso di dedicarci seriamente alla musica, io e mio fratello abbiamo continuato a lavorare su noi stessi, abbiamo realizzato alcuni demo, abbiamo iniziato a suonare in spettacoli locali ovunque potessimo e a poco a poco abbiamo costruito la nostra base di fan sempre di più. Poi abbiamo iniziato a viaggiare al di fuori della California e a fare il giro degli Stati Uniti, continuando a fare strada e a costruire la nostra fan base in tutti gli Stati Uniti. Siamo arrivati a suonare nei più grandi festival reggae del Nord America e speriamo di iniziare a costruire la nostra fanbase anche in Europa, Sud America e oltre.
D. Com’è la scena laggiù?
R. Dove siamo cresciuti, nel sud di San Diego, il roots reggae ha una grande scena. Siamo cresciuti andando ai festival reggae che ospitavano artisti come Don Carlos, Barrington Levy, Eek a Mouse, Israel Vibrations, Steel Pulse, Burning Spear, Twinkle Brothers e così via…. Io e mio fratello siamo cresciuti con il reggae in casa fin da quando eravamo piccoli. La scena di San Diego è forte nella musica reggae e si è orientata verso il roots reggae in particolare fin da quando eravamo giovani. La scena reggae americana è diventata davvero grande negli ultimi anni.
D. C’è una differenza tra la costa orientale e quella occidentale per quanto riguarda il reggae, come nel rap, ad esempio?
R. Penso che ogni band qui negli Stati Uniti abbia il suo stile e il suo suono unico. Quindi non credo che l’est o l’ovest abbiano una distinzione specifica, ogni band porta il proprio stile distinto.
D. Quali sono state le vostre principali influenze?
R. Crescendo abbiamo avuto in casa soprattutto Bob Marley, Steel Pulse, Aswad, Third World, Alpha blondy, Burning Spear che in seguito hanno avuto una grande influenza sul nostro sound. È stato quando abbiamo visto dal vivo la band Midnite da adolescenti che io e mio fratello abbiamo deciso di fondare i Tribal Seeds. Il loro stile, il loro suono e il loro messaggio sono stati il catalizzatore che ha dato il via a tutto.
D. I vostri testi sono sempre molto profondi e consapevoli. Pensi che il pubblico in patria e forse anche nel resto del mondo li recepisca nel modo giusto? Soprattutto in tempi globali difficili come questi?
R. È difficile dire se tutti capiscono i messaggi della musica. Chi vuole davvero sapere cosa viene detto, di solito si prende il tempo per leggere i testi e cercare di capire. Noi parliamo dello stato attuale di alcune cose che stanno accadendo nel mondo di oggi e cerchiamo di rispettare le fondamenta della musica reggae che si scaglia contro gli oppressori, la corruzione, l’avidità. Chiunque sia destinato a entrare in contatto con questi messaggi lo farà. Anche se non tutti capiscono ogni testo, credo che ci sia una certa vibrazione che si percepisce all’interno della musica e con la quale le persone entrano in contatto. Se non altro, speriamo che gli ascoltatori si sentano bene e si godano i ritmi.
D. Rimarrete sempre indipendenti o state pensando di passare a una major?
R. Ci piace molto essere indipendenti. Ci piace essere il capo di noi stessi, rispondere solo a noi stessi e impostare un flusso di lavoro che si rivolga a noi e a nessun altro.

Q. Tell me about Ancient Blood…
A. It’s our new full length album in almost 10 years. We are grateful to have so many amazing featured artists on this one. We wanted to give our fans plenty of songs on this album being it’s been so long, 17 tracks. We like to blend a variety of genres within our style of reggae music and incorporate genres like ska, roots, rock, cumbia, latin, hip hop, trap, edm within our style of music. The title Anicent Blood represents the blood of our ancestors that runs through us and the ancient knowledge, wisdom, spiritual insight that we carry from them.
Q. Names involved. How did you manage to have so many feats on your album?
A. Some of the featured artists we’ve known for years and have toured together. The other featured artists we’re fans of and got in contact with them via email or through friends in the industry. We are elated to have collaborated with such amazing artists.
Q. The band was formed in San Diego?
A. Yes south San Diego, Chula Vista area down by the Tijuana border.
Q. How did the band come about?
A. My brother and I started jamming with some friends in a garage like most bands do, but when we decided we wanted to pursue music seriously, My brother and I continued on ourselves, made some demos, started playing local shows wherever we could and little by little built our fan base more and more. We then started to travel outside of california and make the rounds in the states and continued to hustle the road and built our fan base throughout the US. We’ve worked our way to playing the biggest reggae festivals in north America and really hope to start building our fan base in Europe, South America and beyond.
Q. What is the scene like over there?
A. Where we grew up in south San Diego, roots reggae has a big scene. We grew up going to reggae festivals that featured acts like Don Carlos, Barrington Levy, Eek a mouse, israel vibrations, steel pulse, burning spear, twinkle brothers and so on…. My brother and I grew up with Reggae in the household since we were babies. The San Diego scene is strong in Reggae Music and has been towards roots reggae specifically since we were young. The American Reggae scene has really gotten big over the past recent years.
Q. Is there a difference between east coast and west coast as far as reggae is concerned as there is in rap for example?
A. I think every band here in the states has their own unique style and sound. So I don’t think east or west has a specific distinction, every band brings their own distinct style.
Q. What were your major influences?
A. Growing up we mostly had Bob Marley, Steel pulse, Aswad, Third world, Alpha blondy, Burning spear in the household and later became a big influence on our sound. It’s when we saw the band “Midnite” live as teens is what really inspired my brother and I to start Tribal Seeds. Their style, sound and message was the catalyst that started it all.
Q. Your lyrics are always quite deep and concious. Do you think that audiences both at home and maybe in the rest of the world receive them in the right way? Especially in difficult global times like these?
A. It’s hard to say if everyone understands the messages in the music. Those that really want to know what is being said usually take the time to read the lyrics and try to understand. We do speak to the current state of some of what’s happening in the world today and try to pay respect to the foundations of Reggae music which speaks against the downpressors, corruption, greed. Whoever is meant to connect with these messages will connect with them. Even if not everyone understands every lyric, I think there’s a certain vibe that is felt within the music that people connect with. If nothing else, we hope it makes listeners feel good and enjoy the rhythms.
Q. Will you always remain independent or are you considering a major label?
A. We very much enjoy being independent. We like being our own boss, answering only to ourselves, and set a work flow that caters to us and no one else.
