Dopo tre anni di attesa, Marcus Gad & Tribe presentano finalmente la loro nuova creazione, Ready For Battle. Si tratta del quarto album in studio per l’artista della Nuova Caledonia insieme alla sua band Tribe, creata nel 2017 in occasione dell’uscita dell’album Chanting. Vediamo che cosa ci ha raccontato a riguardo.
D. Cominciamo a parlare del tuo quarto album Ready for Battle…Qual è la battaglia che sei pronto a combattere?
R. È una battaglia per la vita. Una battaglia per la verità e i diritti. Una battaglia per il diritto alla sovranità con cui ogni essere umano nasce. Viviamo in tempi cruciali in cui multinazionali e governi spietati modificano e bollano la vita in nome della crescita economica. Modificando geneticamente semi che hanno nutrito l’umanità per millenni, distruggendo le strutture del suolo, imponendo all’umanità discutibili protocolli sanitari e così via. I vivi e il nostro diritto di disporre di noi stessi sono sotto costante attacco e dobbiamo alzarci in piedi per difendere ciò che sappiamo essere giusto. Il bene sul male.
D. Cosa puoi dirmi della tua band Tribe?
R. Beh, Tribe è la milizia del roots sai… Siamo un gruppo di amici uniti dal nostro amore per la musica roots. Lavoro e collaboro con altri artisti come Tamal che è il nostro tecnico del suono. Ho anche avuto l’onore di registrare un album insieme a Zion I Kings.ma per quanto riguarda le esibizioni dal vivo, mi troverai sul palco con i Tribe. Abbiamo sviluppato questo suono che amo profondamente e voglio condividere con il mondo.
D. Vivi in Nuova Caledonia o in Francia? Qual è la differenza tra i due paesu, anche artisticamente?
R. Originariamente vivo in Nuova Caledonia, ma negli ultimi anni sono stato chiamato a trascorrere lunghi periodi lontano da casa. La Nuova Caledonia è una piccola isola nell’Oceano Pacifico e per condividere la mia musica con le masse ho bisogno di viaggiare in posti come l’Europa. Ma torno ogni anno per alcuni mesi. L’isola è molto diversa dalla Francia. È legalmente territorio francese, ma così lontano da essa geograficamente e culturalmente. È un posto piccolo e ci conosciamo tutti da lontano o da vicino. Abbiamo una cultura e una storia incredibili, così uniche e diverse da tutte le altre isole. La Nuova Caledonia è una colonia francese. Originariamente era abitato dal popolo Kanak che rappresenta circa il 50% della popolazione. L’altra 50% è costituita da deportati francesi (la Nuova Caledonia era una colonia penale), vietnamiti, indonesiani e polinesiani. Ci sono 28 lingue sull’isola, per sole 300.000 persone. Parla di diversità! Quella stessa diversità si può trovare anche in natura, poiché il 76% della vita sull’isola è endemica e quindi non esiste in nessun’altra parte della terra. La nostra laguna è la laguna chiusa più lunga del pianeta e ospita tantissime specie. Potrei andare avanti per ore! Ci sono anche molti artisti promettenti sull’isola, ma dato che siamo così lontani da tutto, le strade per esportare la nostra cultura oltreoceano devono ancora essere aperte.
D. In che modo luoghi così diversi influenzano le tue creazioni? Sotto quali aspetti?
R. Ci sono tanti modi in cui la Nuova Caledonia ha influenzato la mia musica ei miei testi. Innanzitutto, per la sua bellezza naturale. Trascorrere del tempo in natura è una delle cose che preferisco fare e l’isola è un posto fantastico per questo. Paesaggi incontaminati, sconosciuti, selvaggi in attesa di essere esplorati. Trovo anche molta ispirazione nella cultura e nelle tradizioni del popolo Kanak. Il loro legame con la terra e la profonda umiltà e rispetto sono sempre stati una fonte di guida per me. Ho parlato di questi valori in molte delle mie canzoni e credo che come abitante delle isole del Pacifico che si trasferisce all’estero, sia un dovere dare testimonianza della nostra visione del mondo che è così sconosciuta all’estero. D’altra parte, viaggiare in posti così diversi come l’Europa è una grande apertura mentale. L’Europa è diventata un crocevia di tante persone e culture diverse, sento di entrare in contatto con il mondo intero quando vengo qui.
D. Come sei entrato in contatto con il reggae lì? Chi è stata la tua ispirazione?
R. Il reggae è molto presente in Nuova Caledonia. È come la musica nazionale e ha fortemente influenzato la musica tradizionale Kaneka. Quando ero un ragazzino arrivavano molti artisti giamaicani. The Gladiators, Toots and the Maytals, Culture, The Mighty Diamonds, The Abyssinians, Jimmy Cliff, Bunny Wailer, Lucky Dube, Steel Pulse, Aswad, sono venuti tutti. Ricordo che quando avevo circa 10 anni, Burning Spear venne a suonare. A quel tempo eravamo circa 240.000 abitanti e 25.000 vennero allo spettacolo. Più del 10% della popolazione dell’isola!! Quindi ti fai un’idea di quanto sia grande il reggae.
D. E ora come puoi definire il tuo stile così ricco di dub e meditativo. influenze?
R. Beh, ascolto molta musica diversa e amo particolarmente la musica tradizionale, di tutti i continenti. Quindi immagino che molta di questa influenza provenga dall’ascolto di raga indiani, musica devozionale sufi e così via. Il reggae per me è anche inseparabile dal suo aspetto sacro. È una musica di profonda connessione spirituale. Il reggae è un canto devozionale al Grande Spirito e alle Forze Superiori. Essendo io stesso un ricercatore fin dalla mia giovane età, ho sempre visto il Reggae come un mezzo per esprimere questa relazione con l’Onnipotente e si vede nella musica.
D. L’estate scorsa sei stato molto in tour. Ti dà fastidio la vita da tour in confronto alla pace della Nuova Caledonia?
R. Beh, andare in tour è come essere in missione, sai. Una missione per diffondere una buona parola e aumentare la consapevolezza come collettività. Mettiamo in contatto molti fratelli e sorelle che stanno percorrendo lo stesso cammino. Ragioniamo, facciamo ulteriori progetti, mettendo in comune le nostre forze per una giusta causa. È un’ottima piattaforma per apportare un cambiamento attivo. Quindi ovviamente il tour ha i suoi lati negativi e non è sempre facile essere on the road. Ma stiamo prendendo questo tempo per uno scopo più alto, quindi anche se a volte mi manca la mia isola, mantengo la mia attenzione su ciò che deve essere realizzato.
D. Un altro intenso tour è previsto per la prossima estate? Puoi anticiparci già qualcosa?
R. Sì, siamo pronti per la battaglia! Stanno arrivando molti spettacoli e non vediamo l’ora di avere una comunione musicale con il nostro pubblico. Ci è voluto del tempo per pubblicare questo album e abbiamo aspettato di suonarlo dal vivo per un po’, quindi ne siamo felici. Non abbiamo ancora annunciato le date complete del tour per l’estate, ma state pronti, stiamo arrivando da qualche parte vicino a voi!
D. Stai già lavorando a qualcosa di nuovo?
R. La creazione non ha limiti! Sì, lavoriamo sempre per creare nuovi riddim e testi. Viviamo in tempi cruciali e ci sono così tante cose di cui parlare. Ready for Battle è il mio quarto album in studio, ma è solo il secondo album con i Tribe, e ne abbiamo molti altri in arrivo. Ringraziamo il Padre e la Madre. Q. Let’s start talking about your fourth album Ready for Battle..What is the battle you ready to fight?
A. It is a battle for the living. A battle for truth and rights. A battle for the right to sovereignty which every human is born with. We are living in crucial times when multinational corporations and pitiless governments modify and brand the living in the name of economic growth. Genetically modifying seeds that have fed humanity for millennia, destroying the structures of the soil, imposing on mankind questionable sanitary protocols, and so forth. The living and our right to dispose of ourselves are under constant attack, and we must stand up to defend that which we know is right. Good over evil.
Q. What can you tell me about your band Tribe?
A. Well Tribe is the roots militia you know..! We are a group of friends bounded together by our love of roots music. I work and collaborate with other artists such as Tamal, who is our sound engineer. I have also had the honor to record an album alongside Zion I Kings. But as far as live performances go, you will find me on stage with Tribe. We have developed this sound that I deeply love and want to share with the world.
Q. Do you live in New Caledonia or France? How’s the difference between the 2, also artistically?
A. I originally live in New Caledonia, but have been called to spend long periods of time away from home these last few years. New Caledonia is a small island in the Pacific Ocean, and in order to share my music with the masses, I need to travel to places such as Europe. But I do go back every year for a few months.
The island is very different from France. It is legally French territory, but so far from it geographically and culturally. It is a small place and we all know each other from far or close.
We have an incredible culture and history, so unique and different from all other islands. New Caledonia is a French colony. It is originally inhabited by the Kanak people who represent about 50% of the population. The 50 other percents are of French deportees (New Caledonia used to be a jail), Vietnamese, Indonesian and Polynesian people. There are 28 languages on the island, for only 300 000 people. Talk about diversity! That same diversity can be found in nature too, as 76% of life on the island is endemic to it, and thus exists nowhere else on earth. Our lagoon is the longest closed lagoon on the planet and is home to so many species. I could go on for hours!
There are also lots of promising artists on the island, but since we are so far from everything, the roads to exporting our culture overseas are yet to be opened.
Q. How do places so different influence your creations? In what aspects?
A. There are so many ways in which New Caledonia has influenced my music and lyrics. First, by its natural beauty. Spending time in the wild is one of my favorite things to do and the island is such a great place for that. Unspoilt, undiscovered, wild landscapes waiting to be explored.
I also find a lot of inspiration in the culture and traditions of the Kanak people. Their connection to the land and profound humility and respect have always been a source of guidance to me. I have spoken about these values in a lot of my songs and I believe as a Pacific Islander moving abroad, it is a duty to give testimony of our world view which is so unknown abroad.
On the other hand, travelling to such different places like Europe is a big mind opener. Europe has become a crossroads for so many different people and cultures, I feel I get in contact with the whole world when I come here.
Q. How did you get in touch with reggae there? Who was your inspiration?
A. Reggae is very present in New Caledonia. It is like the national music and has greatly influenced traditional Kaneka music. When I was a kid we used to get a lot of Jamaican artists coming over. The Gladiators, Toots and the Maytals, Culture, The Mighty Diamonds, The Abyssinians, Jimmy Cliff, Bunny Wailer, Lucky Dube, Steel Pulse, Aswad, they all came over.
I remember when I was just about 10 years old, Burning Spear came to play. At that time we were about 240 000 inhabitants and 25 000 came to the show. More than 10% of the island’s population !! So you get an idea of how big Reggae is there.
Q. And now how can you define your style so rich of dub and meditative
influences?
A. Well I listen to a lot of different music, and I particularly love traditional music, from all continents. So I guess a lot of that influence comes from listening to Indian ragas, Sufi devotional music, and so on.
Reggae for me is also inseparable from its sacred aspect. It is a music of profound spiritual connection. Reggae is devotional chanting to the Great Spirit and Higher Forces. Being myself a seeker from my young age, I have always seen Reggae as a means to express this relationship with the Almighty and it does show in the music.
Q. Last summer you toured a lot. Does it bother you the tour life in comparison to the peace of New Caledonia?
A.Well touring is like being on a mission you know. A mission to spread a good word and raise consciousness as a collective. We link up a lot of brothers and sisters who are walking the same walk. We reason up, make further projects, putting our strength in common for a just cause. It is a great platform to make an active change.
So of course touring has its downsides and it is not always easy to be on the road. But we are taking this time for a higher purpose, so even though I do miss my island at times, I keep my focus on what is to be fulfiled.
Q. Another intensive tour is expected next summer? Can you anticipate us already something?
A.Yes, we are ready for battle !! A lot of shows are coming and we are really looking forward to musical communion with our public. This album took some time to release and we have been waiting to play it live for a while, so we are joyful for that. We haven’t yet announced the full tour dates for the summer but be ready, we’re coming somewhere near you!
Q. Are you working already on something new?
A. Creation has no limitation!
Yes, we are always working on creating new riddims and lyrics. We live in crucial times and there are so much things to speak of. Ready for Battle is my 4th studio album, but it is only the second album with Tribe, and we have a lot more coming.
