Yeza è la moderna imperatrice del roots reggae, nata e cresciuta a Bull Bay, St. Andrew Jamaica. Definita da molti “Lyrical Lioness” e “Rebel Empress”, grazie al suo lirismo, alle sue splendide melodie, alla sua forte presenza scenica e alla sua versatilità come artista.
D. Vorrei iniziare chiedendoti del tuo nome d’arte. Da dove deriva?
R. Deriva da Yezambique. È un nome che ho creato per me stessa e che avevo già su Facebook. Significa forza e potenza e mi è servito per identificarmi nuovamente.
D. Come hai iniziato a cantare?
R. Ho iniziato a cantare nel 2017 ufficialmente con la mia prima canzone Everything is Irie.
D. Hai iniziato con Bobby Digital a essere coinvolta nel business?
R. Esatto, non avevo idea di cosa fare e come iniziare, ovviamente, ma le foundations sono sempre lì per aiutarci ogni volta che ne abbiamo bisogno. Il mio management ha creato un legame con Calibud. Il figlio di Bobby Digital e così abbiamo realizzato questa canzone insieme nello studio Digital B.
D. E poi hai continuato a collaborare con diversi produttori e artisti. Ha qualche bel ricordo di quanto accaduto in questi anni?
R. Ho molti ricordi positivi in studio con Calibud. Ho anche ottimi ricordi con Sizzla Kalonji, per avere lavorato finalmente con lui dopo aver ascoltato la sua musica per così tanto tempo. È un sogno che si avvera aver lavorato con una leggenda del settore. È stato molto bello lavorare anche con Turbulence, dato che una delle mie canzoni preferite in assoluto è Notorious. Quella canzone parla a tutti i giovani del ghetto e li spinge a fare del loro meglio, a scegliere una vita diversa.
D. È stato difficile per te farti strada come artista donna in questo settore?
R. Come donna devi sempre fare i conti con la tendenza maschile a voler sfruttare l’energia femminile a diversi livelli: economico, sessuale, eccetera. Qualunque sia l’industria in cui si opera, questo accade sempre. Ci sono sempre uomini tossici che vogliono sfruttare le donne. Lo sfruttamento può essere applicato comunque a diverse categorie: classe, razza e così via.
D. Ho letto da qualche parte che ti piacerebbe fare qualche featuring o lavorare con Chronixx, è vero?
R. Sì, Chronixx è uno dei miei artisti preferiti. È quello che ascolto di più tra tutti i nuovi artisti reggae. Spero di fare qualcosa con lui, ma non sono sicuro di cosa stia facendo al momento.
D. La tua musica è consapevole e i tuoi testi sono profondi. Perché pensi che al giorno d’oggi la gente però preferisca altri messaggi? Cosa potrebbe cambiare questa situazione?
R. Penso che le persone e la loro reazione a un certo messaggio siano un riflesso della società. La musica influenza le azioni, ma poi dobbiamo davvero chiedere qualcosa di concreto. È una specie di uovo e gallina e cosa sia venuto prima. Di sicuro la musica non può essere l’unica fonte da cui provengono tutti i mali del mondo. C’è sicuramente dell’altro. Tutto quello che posso fare come musicista e come artista è usare i miei strumenti in modo appropriato. Questa è la mia risposta: ognuno dovrebbe interpretare il proprio ruolo, usare i propri doni. Come nel caso del mio brano Organic, che è della vecchia scuola dancehall, ma mantiene il messaggio puro e sembra che le giovani generazioni lo accettino e lo apprezzino. Abbiamo bisogno di una guida. È complicato raggiungere orecchie diverse con gusti diversi, ma questo è lo sforzo che dobbiamo fare per raggiungere il maggior numero possibile di persone con il nostro messaggio. A volte, però, la gente non sa cosa vuole davvero o di cosa ha bisogno.
D. Hai qualche modello musicale a cui ti ispiri?
R. Non vedo un singolo artista che vorrei seguire ma, in termini di impatto, ho diversi artisti a cui guardo per raggiungere i miei obiettivi e le mie aspirazioni. Per esempio, guardo a veterani come i Mighty Diamonds, con il loro importante valore culturale per la Giamaica e per il mondo, e a molti altri.
D. Stai lavorando a qualcosa di nuovo in studio?
R. Lavoro sempre a qualcosa di nuovo. Il mio nuovo album uscirà il 26 luglio del 2024.
D. E per quanto riguarda il tour?
R. Quest’estate andrò in Danimarca per esibirmi e ho altre cose in programma nell’area, quindi è meglio che restiate sintonizzati.
D. Cosa vorresti dire al pubblico italiano di Reggae.it?
R. Molto rispetto e molto amore per l’Italia! Non vedo l’ora di venire a suonare lì!

Yeza is your modern-day Reggae Roots Empress, born & raised in Bull Bay, St. Andrew Jamaica. Dubbed by many as the “Lyrical Lioness” and “Rebel Empress”, due to her lyricism, effortless melodies, strong stage presence and versatility as an artiste.
Q. I’ d like to start asking you about your stage name. Where it comes from?
A. It derives from Yezambique. is a name I create for myself and i had already on Facebook. It means strenght and power and it was usefuf to re identify myself.
Q. How did you start singing?
A. I started to sing in 2017 officially with my first song Everything is Irie.
Q. Did you start with Bobby Digital to be involved in the business?
A. Correct, I had no idea what to do and how to start of course but foundations are always there to help us whenever we need. My management created a link with Calibud, Bobby Digital’s son and so we did this song together at the Digital B Studio.
Q. And then you went on, cooperating with several producers and artists. Do you have any fond memories of these happening during these years?
A. I’ve many highlights in the studio with Calibud. I’ve also very good memories with Sizzla Kalonji, to work with him finally after listening to his music for so long. It’s a dream come true to have worked with such a legend in the business. It was pretty good to work with Turbulence too since one of my favourite song ever is Notorious. That song speaks to every ghetto youth to push to do his best, to choose a different life.
Q. Was it hard for you to step out as a female artist in this business?
A. As a woman you always have to deal with the male tendency to exploit feminine energy on different levels: economically, sexually, you name it. Whatever industry you’re in, it always occurs. There are always toxic men that want to exploit women. Exploitation can be applied anyway to different categories; class, race and so on.
Q. I read somewhere that you would like to do some featuring or work with Chronixx, is it true?
A. Yes, Chronixx is one of my favourite artist. He is the one I listen to the most of all new reggae artists. I hope to do something with him but I’m not sure what he is up to at the moment.
Q. Your music is conscious and your lyrics are deep. why do you think though nowadays people prefer other messages? What could change this situation?
A. I think that people and their reaction to a certain message is a reflection of society. Music does infuences actions but then we really have to ask. It’s a kind of a hen and egg thing of and what came first. For sure music cannot be the only source where all the bad of the world come from. There is else for sure. All I can do as musician and as an artist is to use my tools in a proper way. to play my role. This is my answer: everybody should play what’s their role, what are their gifts. Like with my tune Organic, which is old dancehall school, but I keep the message pure and it looks like the younger generation accept it and appreciate it. We need guidance. It’s complicated to reach different ears with different flavours but this is the effort we should do to reach as many as we can with our message. Sometimes though people don’t know what they really want or what they really need.
Q. Do you have any musical role models you take inspiration from?
A. I don’t see one single artist I would like to follow the path but, in terms of impact, I’ve several artists I look up, to reach my own goal and aspirations. For example I look to veterans such as Mighty Diamonds, with their important cultural value for Jamaica and the world and many others.
Q. Are you working on something new yourself in the studio?
A. I always work on something new. My new album will come out on 26th July 2024.
Q. And about touring?
A. I’m travelling to Denmark to perform this summer, and I’ve some other stuff in the region so you better stay tuned.
Q. What would you like to say to italian audience of Reggae.it?
A. Much respect and much love for Italy! can’t wait to come there to perform!
